Tips to Winterize Your Home

Posted by Thuy Vi Quach-Braig on Dec 16, 2014

Freezing rain, snow, sleet, icicles even blizzards may describe your winter. If so, it’s time to winterize.  Even if your winter happens to be filled with palm trees and cooler weather, you can still winterize. No matter where you live, taking the time to prepare for the change of seasons makes your home safer and more comfortable while you save money and energy. Follow these steps—before it turns cold (or cool—if you are lucky!).

Winterize your home

Doors—Make sure that your doors are sealed by looking to see if light comes through or determining if you can feel air. Then use weather stripping around the door to “plug” the gaps for enhanced comfort.

Windows and glass doorsWindow film can increase comfort and save energy and money year round, keeping in the heat when it’s cold and keeping it out when it’s hot.

Plumbing—Check the pipes leading outside to help protect against a pipe burst. Just make sure water is drained from pipes then turn off any outdoor water access.

Ceiling Fans—Counter-clockwise rotation produces cooling breezes and clockwise rotation moves warmer air so adjust the direction with the seasons.

Exterior outlets and switch plates—Most people probably don’t think about it, but warm air can escape from outlets. So if you feel air moving or a temperature change around them place outlet gaskets for improved comfort.

Fireplaces—House fires peak in the winter; many as a result of improper fireplace use. Before lighting your first fire of the season, test the flue in your fireplace to make sure it stays open for proper ventilation. Have a chimney sweep regularly clean your chimney to clear any potential fire hazards. Then make sure the flue is open each time you use your fireplace.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors—Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries regularly, especially since home fires and carbon monoxide accidents increase in the winter.

Home energy audit—Invest in a home energy audit to learn what improvements you can make for better energy efficiency, comfort and protection.

Protect your family and keep them comfortable this winter.  Save energy and money when you follow these tips; then take time to enjoy this season—no matter where you live!
